You’ve just got engaged and you want the alcohol flowing at your reception, but don’t have a clue about the cost…or your boss tells you to organize a corporate event and make sure the drinks are plentiful…but don’t spend too much! Where do you begin?
Asking a client about their alcohol budget is always the $1,000,000 question. Everyone wants to provide their guests with a quality bar selection that has variety, but they aren’t sure they can afford it.
When you go out for drinks at your local bar, tavern, pub, saloon, cantina….I think you get the picture, how much do you spend? Cut that amount in half and multiply it by your number of guests. That’s your minimum amount to spend on alcohol.
Check with your caterer and see what that will buy you. If you need a budget-friendly option, your guests are fine with you covering the beer and wine while the mixed drinks are on them. But they definitely want as much variety as possible. I have seen many receptions end early because of limited bar options.
Remember that alcohol service is needed for the entire reception (save the last 30 minutes) and you have to budget accordingly including costs for professional bartending, liability insurance and sales tax.
